Highlights of DIG's Work with Multi-National Institutions
European Investment Bank: DIG participated in a microfinance
sector study for the European investment Bank with the objective to
identify appropriate financing instruments and technical assistance to
support the microfinance sector in Egypt, Gaza and the West Bank,
Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. In March and April of 2006, DIG conducted
an initial country report on the microfinance sector in Lebanon,
summarizing the results of a comprehensive desk study and visits with
several microfinance institutions (MFIs).
UNESCO: In March 2006 DIG President and Senior Vice President
traveled to Jerusalem to conduct a survey of housing in the Old City of
Jerusalem. DIG’s work is part of a large, multi-faceted mission to
prepare long-term preservation of the built environment in the Old City.
DIG was hired by UNESCO to design a housing microfinance program
that would allow households in the Old City to obtain financing to improve
individual households. Due to the Old City’s distinctive heritage – namely
that much of the historical infrastructure belongs to individual families –
UNESCO will be working to assist individual families. This project is
groundbreaking, as it is the first time UNESCO is expanding beyond
restoration to bring development approach to its preservation activities.
CGAP: DIG, working with DAI Europe, conducted a review of the
microfinance sector in Syria for the Consultative Group to Assist the
Poor. The review, which took place in June 2006, also focused on the
feasibility that one of the leading banks in Syria could begin a
microfinance program in the short term.
