DIG in Partnership with TAMEER Bank in Pakistan
In August 2005, DIG signed a technical support agreement with TAMEER
Bank, a newly-licensed microfinance bank in Pakistan. Tameer Bank
contracted DIG in 2005 to provide technical assistance (TA) and support to
Tameer in five main areas: (1) strategic planning (both for the launch and
expansion phases); (2) operations systems and methodology; (3) human
capital development; (4) management and line staff training; and (5) product
development. In addition, DIG provides monitoring and evaluation for
Tameer’s microfinance activities.
DIG delivers the TA to Tameer through in-country visits from DIG core staff,
input from DIG Senior Associates, and technical support from DIG’s
Training Coordinator, Abdo Jaroush. Throughout the contract, DIG’s
Training Coordinator has provided s both in-country and remote assistance,
which will continue until all the systems for the bank have been put in place.
Much of the short-term and long-term strategic advising, and all of the
training sessions, including training of trainers and training of the line staff
for the initial few branches, were conducted on-site in Pakistan.
TAMEER was capitalized by private investors at $10 million and aims to
become the largest microfinance bank in Pakistan. The bank expects to
serve up to 500,000 active clients within five years.
