DIG Plays Key Role in Southern Lebanon Reconstruction
In the immediate aftermath of the July-August 2006 conflict, the Southern
Agriculture and Business Recovery (SABR) program was launched in
response to the immediate needs of the heavily damaged agriculture
sector - the key source of employment and productivity in southern
Lebanon. Due to an existing presence on the ground and long standing
relationships with local municipalities, the SABR program team --
comprised of American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA), Development
Innovations Group (DIG), and the Association for Development of Rural
Capacities (ADR) -- was able to quickly and effectively respond to the crisis.
With a focus on rebuilding small, but critical agricultural infrastructure,
SABR improved the economic livelihoods of thousands of families and
hundreds of communities in the qazas of Bint Jbeil, Tyre, Nabitya, Saida,
and Marjyoun – the locations most directly affected by the bombings.
Within five months of the signing of the USAID/OFDA grant, the SABR
program has already achieved the following results:
• Distributed $1,614,000 in cash grants to 1,700 micro and small scale
enterprises and farmers providing the liquidity bridge needed to allow
these economic agents to recover their income generating activities, and
retain employees;
• Assisted 318 young people and unemployed persons in finding
productive work and earn income through vocational training activities; and
• Rehabilitated 28 small-scale infrastructure projects in rural, agriculture
dependent communities.
As a result of these activities, SABR has:
• Directly impacted the economic livelihoods of 21 communities, 82,500
direct beneficiaries, 276,500 indirect beneficiaries; and,
• Generated 26,748 hours of direct, immediate employment for the cash
strapped region.
